There’s something people don’t say enough about summer in the Outaouais: you don’t have to go far to have a real resort experience.
While everyone else is booking flights, hotels and complicated itineraries, some people have found something a little simpler. An address in Gatineau, 15 minutes from Ottawa, where the spa, restaurant, hotel and golf course all share the same site. Where you can arrive in the early afternoon and not leave until the next day at noon.
That’s Kōena Spa. And in July, it’s the best resort in the region.
What a resort experience actually means
A resort isn’t just a beautiful place. It’s a place designed so you don’t want to leave — where every element, the spa, the food, the accommodation, complements rather than simply coexists.
At Kōena, that looks like this: outdoor thermal baths in the July sun, the full circuit with Finnish sauna, hammam, pink Himalayan salt room and cold plunge. Treatments at Mālama — massages, facials, body treatments. Dinner on the KaTO or ONŌ terrace. And if the mood to stay strikes, a room at Hôtel Château Cartier with spa access included from check-in through noon the next day.
No complicated packing. No connections. Just everything you need, in one place.
The best time to come
In summer, Kōena is busy almost every day — which says something. The outdoor baths in July’s heat are an experience of their own. The light stretching to 9pm, the terrace, the tempered water when it’s warm outside — there’s something particularly right about that combination.
Weekday evenings are especially popular: lower volume, more space, a softer atmosphere. The Petite Évasion (access after 5pm) is an affordable, efficient way to live the full experience after a workday.
